NIFT Shillong permanent campus at Umsawli came alive during the annual fest Spectrum in 2022 with the vibrant “Craft Bazaar”. This two-day event, held as part of the North East Festival and the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, aimed to empower North East crafts through innovative design interventions while promoting the Handloom and Handicraft Sector of North east India.
The Craft Bazaar, a centerpiece of the Spectrum Festivities, featured twenty-four accomplished artisans representing various corners of the North East region. These skilled artisans showcased a diverse range of handicraft and handloom products, encompassing everything from exquisite Nagaland, Jewelry to the renowned Black Pottery of Longi Manipur. Additionally, visitors could explore Wood craft, handmade jewelry, embroidery & crochet, cane & bamboo, terracotta and handloom and hand-printed textiles, each item a testament to the rich cultural heritage and craftmanship of the North east.
As a special tribute to the North East Festival celebration during Spectrum, students and faculty members from NIFT Shillong presented an enchanting display of the traditional costumes of the North East. This added a unique cultural dimension to the event, further highlighting the region’s diverse and vibrant heritage.
The Craft Bazaar, an integral part of NIFT Shillong’s annual fest Spectrum, received an overwhelming response from both craft enthusiasts and buyers. It attracted a substantial number of visitors from Shillong city and its neighboring areas, making it not just an exhibition of crafts but a vibrant celebration of the North East’s artistic talents. This event provided a platform for artisans to showcase their skills and products while fostering a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural tapestry of the region within the spirited atmosphere of Spectrum.
